Vision of a Graduate
Vision of a Graduate

The Acton-Boxborough Regional School District’s Vision of a Graduate is a community-driven initiative that defines the core skills and experiences our students need to succeed in college, careers, and civic life. Developed through a year-long collaborative process involving students, educators, families, and community members, this vision bridges the learning journey from Pre-Kindergarten through 12th grade.
Our Vision of a Graduate is centered around five key competencies, each supported by “I can” statements that reflect the growth we strive to foster in every student.
-
I can …
- demonstrate physical and mental wellness by developing my self-confidence and self-awareness through understanding my strengths, passions, emotions, and needs.
- take healthy risks and use setbacks as opportunities for growth.
- show resilience by adjusting to changing circumstances and persevering toward goals despite challenges.
-
I can …
- listen actively to build understanding.
- engage in conversations with others about a broad range of topics.
- convey ideas in multiple ways for a variety of audiences and purposes.
-
I can …
- seek diverse perspectives to broaden and deepen my understanding.
- demonstrate empathy by respecting the feelings and experiences of others.
- work with others to contribute to collective goals.
-
I can …
- reflect on and question my own ideas and think critically about information.
- identify effective strategies to expand ideas and navigate obstacles.
- develop work through creative synthesis and ethical use of resources.
-
I can …
- take ownership of my actions and decisions.
- demonstrate respect for others, myself, and my environment.
- understand my role in and actively contribute to my communities.

From Kindergarten to Graduation: A Unified Journey
The Vision of a Graduate is not a high school initiative; it is a K-12 continuum.
Our AB Forward work aims to support greater coherence and consistency across all of our elementary schools. The Vision of a Graduate was finalized in service to this work and will enhance the development of five competencies at every single level. Whether a student is learning to share in PK-3 classroom, collaborating on a STEAM project in grades 4-6, or conducting advanced research in high school, they are actively building the skills of an AB Graduate.
The AB Vision of a Graduate: Preparing Students for a Changing World
At Acton-Boxborough, education extends far beyond traditional academics. Our ultimate goal is to prepare every student to thrive in an increasingly complex, interconnected, and rapidly evolving world.
The AB Vision of a Graduate serves as our district's North Star. It defines the five core competencies that we intentionally cultivate in every student, from their first day in kindergarten to the day they walk across the graduation stage. These five pillars bridge the gap between classroom learning and real-world impact.
1. Adaptability
Navigating change with confidence and resilience. AB graduates view setbacks not as failures, but as essential opportunities for growth. They possess the physical, mental, and emotional wellness required to navigate uncertainty, adjust to changing circumstances, and approach new challenges with a healthy dose of self-awareness and optimism.
2. Intellectual Curiosity
Thinking critically, questioning deeply, and exploring endlessly. We foster a lifelong love of learning by encouraging students to look beyond the surface. AB graduates don't just accept information; they analyze it, question their own assumptions, and use creative problem-solving to navigate academic and real-world obstacles.
3. Collaboration
Working together to achieve shared goals. The world's greatest challenges aren't solved in isolation. AB students actively seek out diverse perspectives to deepen their own understanding. They practice empathy, respect individual differences, and understand how to leverage the unique strengths of a team to make a collective impact.
4. Integrity
Living ethically and contributing positively to the world. Character matters. Our graduates take full ownership of their actions and demonstrate unwavering respect for themselves, others, and the global environment. They understand what it means to be an ethical citizen and actively work to leave their communities better than they found them.
5. Communication
Listening actively, speaking purposefully, and connecting authentically. Effective communication is the foundation of a strong community. Our students learn to express complex ideas clearly across multiple mediums, but more importantly, they learn to listen with the intent to understand. They engage in civil, meaningful discourse that bridges differences and builds common ground.
